Spring Break

Just a bit of what I've been up to so far on "spring break".  I say that tentatively since I still had to take a midterm, go to my internship and have work the next two days!  But, I've still managed to make time for some fun stuff.

Biggest, greasiest pizza, EVER.

Girls day w/my friend, Christina!

Staring contest w/Awesomo.  He won.  Obviously.

Freshly brewed Root Beer!  Mmm.

Date Night w/Nick last night.  We watched "Woman in Black" after this!

Food, fun, shopping and date night...

These adventures have resulted in my new (unhealthy) obsession with LUSH and added to my already severe addiction to root beer.  :)

Nook Obsession

Barnes and Noble NOOK eBook Reader (WiFi only) [ Black & White ]

Today I should be finishing up a lot of homework for the upcoming week.  Sadly, today is also the last day of Spring Break.  But, it's still cloudy out and I just downloaded about 65 new books on my Nook.  Last night I completed "The Hunger Games"- if you have not read it yet, YOU MUST!  Now all I can think about is reading the last two books in the trilogy (which I have on my Nook).  Ugh.. I hate how lethargic rainy, cloudy days make me.  So, should I procrastinate and just give in to my laziness?  Or should I work on my assignments?  I think that we all know what's going to happen... I may as well just give in to the "dark side".

I also really want some Panda Express.... yumm...

A nap sounds nice too...  decisions decisions.  Who am I kidding?

Never Catch A Falling Cactus: A True Story.

Today I planned on a totally cool post, completely organized with plenty of pictures, ideas and all that fun stuff.  But, it seems that my (long) day turned out to be a bit more interesting than I thought it would be, so I'm going to share it.  Today was supposed to be a free day for me.  Reading, laying out by the pool in the backyard, studying, TV- all the good things I posted about yesterday.  Due to the time change, I've been having a difficult time going to bed at my normal time.  So, I stayed up generally late expecting to sleep in.

Well.  My phone rings at 7:23am (to be exact) and it's Nick (the boyfriend).  I roll over, half asleep and answer the phone.  Nick had left for work this morning around 6:45am, so he hadn't been gone for very long.  He tells me that I need to come pick him up from work, to which I reply, "Why?" since he still had about 6 more hours left to work.  "I need you to pick me up and take me to the hospital..." he says, which of course makes me perk up immediately.  I begin to freak out and ask why and the reason was pretty much the last I had expected.  "Well, I was working and saw a cactus that was falling off a rack, so I reached out and caught it with my bare hand."

What.

I know, right?  So, I throw some clothes on, race out the door and head to his work which is literally 5 minutes away from our house.  There are a few things you need to know before I continue with the story.  The first is that Nick works at a home improvement store part time when he doesn't have class.  The second is that he works in the outside lawn and garden department, meaning that he deals with plants and those sorts of things all day.  And, lastly, the cactus was wrapped in brown paper (because it was a newly received item), so he could not see what it was exactly... and there was a 50% chance that it was a succulent and a 50% chance that it was a cactus.  Terrible odds.

By the time I got there, he had pulled out sixteen spines from his hand, counted twenty-three holes total and had a piece of a spine broken off and wedged up through his middle finger.  Once we got to the ER and checked in, I really wanted to take a picture and he was actually in a cheerful mood.  But, then the pain set in so backed off of the photo op idea.  After I filled out all the paperwork (his right hand was the injured one) and X-rays to check for damage to the bones, the piece wedged in his finger was removed giving him some mobility back to his hand.  Then, they discovered another piece which could possibly just be a sprained tendon and decided to leave it there to either work its way out, or heal if it is the latter.  Needless to say, we spent all morning there and by early afternoon we were filling his RX (which took SIX hours- we went home, no worries) for antibiotics and pain killers.  Sigh.  The day continued on with back and forth trips to Walgreens, his work and the hospital again to pick up X-Rays and now here I am at 8pm, finally settling in.

Smiley Face Squeeze BallTomorrow we are going to an orthopedic surgeon for follow up.  Since he can't drive due to immobility and the fact that he will be on heavy duty pain meds, I get to play chauffeur.  =]  Just because I can't do all the other fun stuff I had planned for break, I can at least look on the bright side... quality time with the boyfriend hooray!  Until next time...

Spring Break 2011: The Stay at Home Edition.

Spring break is here!  I have slaved away for the past two weeks... writing, cramming and stressing over midterms.  What a relief to finally have a semblance of a break this semester.  Unfortunately, I have to stay in town for a few reasons.  The first being that I have to work a few days this week.  Another is due to lack of funding... one must have dinero if they plan on going on a vacation!  But, those things are NOT going to stop me from having a fantastic break.  Here's what I've been doing (or plan on doing) for the next few days:

1. TV Shows: I have missed out on so many great shows these past few months due to classes and homework.  This makes me so sad, because I am a self proclaimed TV show addict.  I especially love to watch full seasons, one after the other.  My choice for this break is HBO's "Rome."  I must say that Showtimes "The Tudors" is still at the top of my list (who can beat Jonathan Rhys Meyers at King Henry VII?) for historical dramas, but "Rome" is pretty good so far as well.  There are only two seasons which means I will be able to finish the series since each episode is 40 minutes and there are about 20 episodes total (yes, I have no problem with sitting in front of the TV for 10 hours straight.  It's terrible, I know).  Since I'm also a huge literature/historical buff, one could practically claim that I am watching them for educational purposes...?

2. Reading for Leisure and School:
I am on day 3 of my break and I've already finished a novel for one of my classes that is due for the next time class meets.  I must admit that this novel is fantastic, which is why it was such a quick read for me.  "The Penelopiad" by Maragaret Atwood is just one of the books assigned to me for my Lit Theory course this semester.  I have already endured Kafka's "The Trial", so this novel was a much needed break.  I have also stocked up on a few other novels for my Nook as well to read when I get a free moment.  Leisure reading is amazing, but it's also nice to know that I'm probably ahead of some of my classmates.  Here are a few of the books that I plan on reading over break.  Wish me luck on completing them all!
(I purchased these from amazon.com and bn.com)

3.  Spring Cleaning:  I don't know about you, but I feel like my closet is brimming with winter clothes that are just asking to be put away and be replaced by summer dresses and shorts.  I plan on setting aside a few hours to pull out things I know that I will never wear again and I am going to sell them to second hand clothing stores.  Where I live, there are many trendy second hand stores with great deals, which in turn also pay fairly for my gently used items.  Everything else will go to Goodwill and jackets and sweaters will retire until October.

4. Randoms:  During the week, when classes are in session, I always feel so incredibly overwhelmed by the amount of homework I am assigned.  I know that this is the case for many other college students as well.  It seems as though nothing else exists beyond school, work, homework and the occasional bit of sleep and necessary consumption of food.  Now that my head is somewhat clear, I can take care of the little things that I've been putting off.  For example, I've accumulated quite a few books to study for the GRE (which I will talk about in more depth in a future post), but I have yet to open a single one!
Cracking the GRE with DVD, 2011 Edition (Graduate School Test Preparation)Now is my time to look through them and plan out the best study path for me, so that I will be ready for the exam by July!  I've also need to update my YouTube website www.youtube.com/cupcakegel  I always feel so bad when I go weeks without posting a video, because I love the interaction I get to have with the YouTube community when I'm involved.  Other than that, frequent naps are also on the agenda this spring break because that is definitely something I was lacking during midterms...

5. Mini-Kind of-But Not Really-Trip:  Budget cuts to the education system within my state have been a hot topic and I for one am heavily involved with my school overall.  I couldn't imagine it having to shut down due to lack of funding, nor am I keen on the idea of losing my favorite professors to cuts or having to pay a 12% tuition increase for my last year of college.  These sorts of things make me think very seriously about leaving the state when I attend graduate school.  My point here is that my college is funding a totally FREE bus trip to Northern Nevada, for an education rally taking place there, on the last weekend before break.  Although spending 16-hours round trip on a bus does not sound like the most ideal "vacation" to most... it could be fun and hopefully it will have an impact on our goal.  I'm definitely looking forward to the experience that this day trip has to offer and I won't mind the chilly weather there either.
